Practical Guidance on Plastic Waste Reduction for Hotels

Futouris, schauinsland-reisen and Travel Without Plastic have reduced around 14 tons of plastic and saved over 155,000 euros as part of a joint project with three hotels in the United Arab Emirates. Based on the project results, this comprehensive manual was developed to support hotels on their path to plastic reduction.

The manual provides a clear overview of the most commonly used single-use plastic products in the hotel industry, their environmental impact and possible alternatives. The measures taken by Hilton Hotels as part of the project are described in detail here, divided into different operational areas such as hotel rooms, housekeeping or the F&B area. The guideline also includes information on the ecological and economic benefits of reducing plastic as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the respective alternatives. Particularly valuable: The measures implemented by the three pilot hotels are explicitly marked and provide practical insights into the experiences and results.

Projekt “Hilton Hotels go plastic-free”

By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans. Tourism is both the cause and the victim. Futouris and schauinsland-reisen have set themselves the goal of identifying plastic waste in three hotels in the Hilton hotel chain in the United Arab Emirates and reducing it through appropriate measures. First, the type and quantity of plastic used was identified and analyzed in on-site audits. Based on the results, alternatives and measures to reduce plastic consumption were implemented together with the employees. This will save around 14 tons of plastic and around 155,000 euros.
