The Bachan Community Development Center, which we are building in the Indian Himalayan region around Chamoli as part of a joint project with Gebeco and Fernweh Fair Travel, has now been officially inaugurated. The opening was celebrated with a traditional Indian puja ceremony.
“Puja” is Sanskrit and means “worship” or “to honour” or simply “celebration.” It involves showing reverence and devotion to deities, sacred beings, or the divine through prayers, songs, and rituals.
The opening “puja” for new projects, buildings or businesses is a significant tradition that marks the beginning of a business venture. Divine blessings for prosperity and success as well as positive energy for the new venture are sought. These are considered particularly important for the growth and stability of a company.
The conclusion of the ceremony is also particularly important; it is here that the blessings received are reflected upon and the positive intentions for the business are reaffirmed.
Maintaining the positive energy for the business may include regularly cleaning and tidying the business premises, praying daily, and adhering to ethical business practices to ensure God’s continued blessing.
The opening puja for our Community Development Center was a complete success. It began with the blessing of the local priest, who prayed with the women from the surrounding villages for the success of our project. Afterwards, our project coordinator, Poonam, discussed the next steps with these women.
The goal of the project: to help women generate their own income through tourism and thus become more independent.
