Inauguration-Puja for our Community Development Center

The Bachan Community Development Center, which we are building in the Indian Himalayan region around Chamoli as part of a joint project with Gebeco and Fernweh Fair Travel, has now been officially inaugurated. The opening was celebrated with a traditional Indian puja ceremony.

What does “Puja” mean?

“Puja” is Sanskrit and means “worship” or “to honour” or simply “celebration.” It involves showing reverence and devotion to deities, sacred beings, or the divine through prayers, songs, and rituals.

 

The opening “puja” for new projects, buildings or businesses is a significant tradition that marks the beginning of a business venture. Divine blessings for prosperity and success as well as positive energy for the new venture are sought. These are considered particularly important for the growth and stability of a company.

What are the requirements for a “puja”?

  • Choosing an auspicious date and time (determined by consulting a Hindu calendar or an experienced priest so that the date and time align with the astrological positions for success)
  • Meticulous performance of the rituals, such as lighting the ceremonial lamp, which symbolizes the dispelling of darkness and the introduction of knowledge and understanding
  • Offerings (e.g. flowers, fruits or sweets) as a sign of gratitude and devotion
  • Distribution of “prasad,” a holy food, is particularly important. It is first offered to the deities and then distributed among the participants, symbolizing the spreading of blessings among all present
  • Involvement of family, staff, and distinguished guests, which reinforces the communal aspect and significance of the event

 

The conclusion of the ceremony is also particularly important; it is here that the blessings received are reflected upon and the positive intentions for the business are reaffirmed.

 

Maintaining the positive energy for the business may include regularly cleaning and tidying the business premises, praying daily, and adhering to ethical business practices to ensure God’s continued blessing.

Bachan Community Development Center officially opened with “Puja” ceremony

The opening puja for our Community Development Center was a complete success. It began with the blessing of the local priest, who prayed with the women from the surrounding villages for the success of our project. Afterwards, our project coordinator, Poonam, discussed the next steps with these women.

 

The goal of the project: to help women generate their own income through tourism and thus become more independent.

About our project

The future belongs to women! Therefore, the joint project with Gebeco aims to empower a group of women in the Chamoli region of northern India by integrating them into the tourism sector. They will be trained, for example, in the production of local products that they can sell to visitors and locals, thus generating their own income and becoming independent.
