Hotels Go Net Zero

The joint Futouris project is part of the implementation phase of the industry project "Climate Conscious Travel". The aim is to support hotels across Europe in setting up and implementing active climate management for their operations.

Project goals

  • Supporting hotels in the introduction and implementation of active climate management.
  • Gaining insights into supply chain emissions (Scope 3) of hotels and opportunities for targeted reduction.
  • Raising awareness among hotel management and employees on climate protection.
  • Creation of training and learning materials for industry transfer.

Hotels Go Net Zero: Measuring & reducing hotels’ carbon footprints

In order to achieve the global climate goals of the Paris Agreement, the hotel industry is faced with the challenge of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 66% by 2030 compared to 2010 levels and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. In order to achieve these ambitious goals, it is essential that hotels precisely measure, analyze and effectively reduce their carbon footprint.

The Futouris project “Hotels Go Net Zero” now wants to take on this challenge. In cooperation with a group of pilot hotels selected by the Futouris member companies DERTOUR Group, Schauinsland – Reisen and Hotelplan Group, the project is dedicated to analyzing and reducing the CO2e emissions caused by hotel operations. This is done using the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI), a recognized standard for measuring emissions in the hotel industry.

Based on a detailed analysis of the data collected, specific goals and measures are developed together with the hotel teams and experts in order to successfully shape the path to climate neutrality. The project pays particular attention to Scope 3 supply chain emissions, which play a significant role in a hotel’s overall emissions profile.

Practical tools and materials such as guidelines and webinars are then created based on the findings. These serve to share the knowledge and strategies developed across the industry and thus convince a large number of other hotels to adopt active climate management.

The “Hotels Go Net Zero” project is a central element of the implementation phase of the Climate Conscious Travel industry project and makes a decisive contribution to supporting hotels in the introduction and implementation of active climate management. By providing specialist knowledge, methods and tools, the project supports the hotel industry in the introduction and implementation of active climate management, thus paving the way for the long-term achievement of net zero emissions.

Project activities

The following activities are planned:

  • Kickoff workshops with pilot hotels on the background and goals of the project, calculation bases and system limits, as well as possible reduction measures
  • Data collection: Determination and analysis of CO2e emissions in the participating hotel
  • On-site climate audit in the hotels to identify reduction measures
  • Derivation of a “Net Zero” roadmap for participating hotels including goals, strategies and measures to reduce emissions
  • Implementation and testing of the pilot measures, accompanying monitoring of the results, adaptation of the measures if necessary
  • Development of a guidance with suitable measures and good practice examples for use by other players in the industry
  • Industry transfer: Communication of the project results to the industry, dissemination of the created guide, joint implementation of an online event
