STAY FAIR - Making sustainably certified accommodations more visible

With the help of the STAY FAIR attribute, amadeus, in collaboration with Fairweg, makes sustainably certified accommodations visible in the amadeus sales channels, making it significantly easier for travelers to find suitable accommodations.

52% of German travelers want to filter for accommodations with a sustainability certification on their next booking.

Demand for more sustainable travel options is rising

More and more travelers want to travel more responsibly and stay in sustainably certified accommodations, but often don’t know where to find them or can’t find enough information about the accommodations and their sustainability efforts themselves. The search for authentically sustainable accommodations is also quite time consuming for employees in travel agencies .

In numbers

  • For 2023, 59% of German travelers stated that they wanted to stay overnight in sustainable accommodation at least once, and 28% have already done so in 2022.
  • 29% say they actively look for information about an accommodation’s sustainability measures before booking.
  • 34% of German travelers don’t even know where and how they can find sustainable travel offers (such as accommodation).

Implementation of sustainability-related hotel attributes planned

In order to make sustainably certified accommodations more visible to travel agency employees and customers, they are marked with the STAY FAIR attribute in the Amadeus sales channels. In close cooperation with the online travel portal Fairweg, hotels are displayed that have a sustainability certificate recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

In addition, it is planned to introduce further hotel attributes as part of the joint project, such as organic cuisine or the availability of e-bikes, with which the sustainable commitment of an accommodation will become more visible in the future and travel agents can better advise their customers.

Which additional sustainability-related hotel attributes are implemented is determined together with the travel agents via short surveys in the Bistro portal.

In addition, awareness-raising measures are implemented (e.g. short seminars). The impact of the measures implemented will be determined in further rounds of surveys among bistro users.

Project goals

  1. Increasing the awareness and use of the “STAY FAIR” hotel attribute in the Amadeus sales channels
  2. Development and implementation of sustainability-related hotel attributes to provide more comprehensive information and awareness among travel agency employees.

Project activities

The following activities are planned

  • Recording the perception of the hotel attribute “STAY FAIR” by users of the Bistro Portal
  • Query of other sustainability-related hotel attributes used by sales in the Bistro Portal
  • Further elaboration and development of desired sustainability-related hotel attributes
  • Implementation of awareness and communication measures to improve the use of sustainability-related hotel filters
  • Analysis of the use of the hotel filters via regular short surveys in the bistro portal
