Together, Colourful, Strong: Diversity in Tourism

Futouris e.V. and the AER Cooperation are working on promoting greater diversity in tourism companies as part of their joint project. The AER Cooperation's diversity-friendly corporate mission statement will be analyzed and surveys among AER member companies conducted. Based on the findings, practical recommendations for implementing diversity in corporate strategies will be developed and shared with the industry.

Project goals

  • Raising awareness of diversity within the AER Cooperation and its member companies, as well as the entire tourism industry.
  • Developing concrete measures to promote diversity in tourism.
  • Supporting human resources managers in implementing diversity-friendly structures.

What does diversity mean?

Diversity in companies means systematically promoting and utilizing the diversity of employees – both in terms of personal characteristics such as gender, age, origin, disability or sexual orientation as well as individual skills and experiences. The goal is to create an inclusive work environment in which all employees feel valued and included. This promotes innovation, improves decision-making, and increases the company’s competitiveness.

Diversity in companies – a crucial topic

Diversity in companies is far more than a short-term trend – it represents a crucial success factor for sustainable growth and long-term competitiveness.

By consciously promoting diversity, companies can strengthen their innovative capacity, improve their decision-making and create a work culture that positively impacts employee satisfaction and retention.

Diversity plays a key role, particularly in the globally connected tourism industry. As a service sector strongly characterized by interpersonal interactions and relationships, tourism benefits particularly from diverse perspectives and cultural openness.

Furthermore, the tourism industry has particular potential to promote participation and diversity. Valuable spaces for intercultural encounters are created, fostering mutual understanding and thus counteracting prejudice and exclusion.

Goal: Integration of diversity into the corporate strategy

As part of the project, which is being carried out by a master’s student from the AER Cooperation, the status quo of diversity within the AER Cooperation will be analyzed and the existing, diversity-friendly corporate mission statement will be reviewed. In addition, an anonymous survey among AER member companies will be used to examine the extent to which the corporate mission statement is actively implemented.

Based on the results, practical recommendations for concrete measures will be developed and shared with the industry to promote diversity within the industry and integrate it into corporate strategy.

An interactive workshop will support human resources managers in member offices in actively implementing diversity into their daily work.

Project activities

The following activities are planned

  • Definition of diversity dimensions
  • Analysis of status quo of diversity within the AER cooperation
  • Review and analysis of the existing corporate mission statement
  • Anonymous survey of AER member companies on the current diversity situation within the company
  • Analysis of all data and derivation of recommendations for action to promote diversity in the industry
  • Publication of the results summarised in a catalog of measures for the industry
  • Conduction of an interactive workshop for human resources managers within the AER cooperation
